Dr. Bruce Hyman will present a 90 minute workshop on "Car Killers and Other Horrific Thoughts: Cognitive-Behavioral Strategies for Harming Obsessions" at the 2003 National conference of the Obsessive-Compulsive Foundation (OCF) in Nashville, Tennessee. The conference will be held from July 24-27, 2003 at the Gaylord Opryland Resort in the heart of music city, USA.

The annual OCF conference is the largest meeting of it's type in the world, bringing together the nation's leading clinicians, scientists and researchers to share the latest knowledge and understanding of OCD and related disorders. Persons with OCD and family members are particularly welcomed and encouraged to attend as there are numerous workshops and experiences specifically geared to patients and family members seeking to deepen their understanding of OCD. Having encouraged many patients of the OCD Resource Center of Florida to attend the OCF national conference over the past few years, I can attest to the wonderful response by all patients and family members to this empowering experience. Many attendees report this conference to be one of the most valuable experiences in their recovery from OCD.

DON'T MISS IT!!

7/24-27/03

Dr. Hyman presented at seminar at the 2003 Obsessive-Compulsive Foundation's National Conference in Nashville entitled: "Car Killers and other Horrific Thoughts: Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment Strategies for Harming Obsessions." The seminar was very well received and attended by almost one hundred clinicians, with many sufferers and family members in attendance as well.

Overall, this was one of the most successful OCF conferences. The setting, at the Gaylord Opreyland Hotel, was truly an experience in itself. The huge ultra modern hotel is over 56 acres with three enormous glass atrium enclosures containing rivers, waterfalls and the most gorgeous indoor landscaping imaginable. And the city of Nashville, known as the country music capital of the world, was great fun with excellent entertainment.

The conference was extremely valuable to both clinicians interested in learning more about OCD, as well as to the patients and families who attended. The latest in treatment and research was presented. There is considerable hope that new directions in understanding the brain circuits involved in OCD can lead to improved medications to ease the symptoms. Great progress is being made, and yet much more needs to be done.

Dr. Hyman and Dr. Breakstone appeared on a Channel 7 WSVN News "Healthcast" story on compulsive shopping.  Compulsive shopping disorder is the preoccupation with shopping and the inability to resist buying things that one doesn't need nor can afford. Researchers at Stanford University found that the anti-depressant drug Celexa significantly reduced symptoms of compulsive shopping in twenty four people suffering from the disorder for at least ten years. The "Healthcast" segment described the plights of local south Floridians who are compulsive shoppers. Dr. Hyman offered some of the cognitive-behavioral approaches used with these patients. Dr. Breakstone discussed how the medication may help these patients - by controlling the underlying depression and anxiety that many of these patients suffer from.

Our center has added Internet-based online consultation to its service offerings for patients with OCD and related disorders. The consultations are held live, in real time over a broadband internet connection using a webcam and video conferencing software. Unlike previous web cam technology, today's equipment over a broadband (DSL or cable modem) connection offers crystal clear sound (much better than a telephone) and good live video- almost like being live in the consultation room! This technology has the potential to offer effective help to persons in remote areas of the world who do not have access to qualified help for OCD and related anxiety disorders, or are home bound due to their disorder. For further information, contact our Dr. Hyman at ocdhope@bellsouth.net to determine if this service is right for you.
