Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – often referred to as “The doubting disease,” symptoms include excessive checking, repeating, washing, obsessions with contamination, neatness, orderliness, perfection, preventing or causing harm or danger to others. OCD has many different but related faces:

  • Primarily Obsessional OCD – unwanted, intrusive horrific thoughts, feelings or impulses of possibly causing harm or danger to others or oneself
  • Sexual Identity OCD (also referred to HOCD), persistent, intrusive doubts about being gay in a person who is straight.
  • Health Related OCD – excessive preoccupation with having a serious illness or disease accompanied by excessive measures to prevent or avoid it.
  • “Hit and Run” OCD– excessive preoccupation with possibly causing a serious driving accident
  • Religious OCD (scrupulosity)- persistent doubts and worries about having violated a religious precept, combined with compulsions (e.g., ritualistic praying) to relieve those doubts.
  • Touretic or “just right” OCD – repetitive performance of compulsive behaviors until the behavior “feels just right”
  • Body-Focused or “sensorimotor” OCD – excessive focus upon normal bodily processes such as breathing, blinking, swallowing, heart beating, visual distractions, or body parts.

Anxiety Disorders- a group of mental disorders involving feelings of worry, fear and dread about future events that interfere with normal functioning:

  • Panic Attacks – “out of the blue” discrete periods of intense fear and anxiety
  • Panic Disorder – persistent preoccupation with bodily sensations associated with the possibility of having a future panic attack
  • Agoraphobia – avoidance of “unsafe places” for fear of anxiety and panic symptoms
  • Social Anxiety Disorder – excessive fear of social situations and scrutiny of others
  • Specific Phobias- excessive fear of a specific object such as mice, rats, spiders, snakes, blood-injection-injury, vomiting (emetophobia), etc.
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder – excessive, uncontrollable worries resulting from an intolerance of uncertainty
  • Fear of Flying – avoidance of commercial flight or inability to fly without severe distress
