Bruce M. Hyman, Ph.D., L.C.S.W.

Director, Cognitive-Behavior Therapist

Dr. Hyman is a Florida Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work who holds master's and doctoral degrees from Florida State University. Since 1987, Dr. Hyman has devoted himself to improving the lives of patients with OCD and their family members, in addition to promoting greater community awareness and understanding of OCD in the Florida community and throughout the United States.

He has worked in numerous psychiatric settings since 1975, and private practice since 1981 specializing in the treatment of anxiety disorders. In 1987 he began an intensive study of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) to better serve his patients suffering from this serious, disabling disease. He obtained further training in exposure and response prevention treatment for OCD at the Medical College of Pennsylvania Anxiety Disorders Clinic under Drs. Edna Foa and Blanche Freund. In 1992 he established the OCD Resource Center of Florida, and has since successfully helped over 1000 people with OCD, from all over the U.S. and South America, young and old, get control of their symptoms and live better lives. The Center has grown substantially in its service to the Florida community, monthly serving hundreds of patients of all ages with OCD and related disorders, offering a wide range of services. In addition, the Center offers services in Spanish, thereby making OCD treatment available to the Hispanic community of Florida and South America.

In 1996 Dr. Hyman was chosen among a panel of national experts on OCD to participate in the "Expert Consensus Guidelines"- a national project to develop effective treatment guidelines for psychiatric disorders, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry. He has appeared on national television as an OCD expert on the ABC News program "20/20" (November 1996 and November 1999), "The John Bradshaw Difference," and "The Montel Williams Show." In December 2005, Dr. Hyman appeared on MTV's award winning reality series "True Life," in a segment called "I Have OCD," which chronicled the lives of young people struggling with and overcoming OCD.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Hyman is a skilled lecturer/trainer/educator. Between 1989-1992 he was an adjunct faculty member of Florida International University Graduate School of Social Work in Miami. He has trained hundreds of mental health professionals in the use of cognitive-behavioral procedures with OCD, providing workshops, continuing education programs and lectures at national conferences devoted to OCD and anxiety disorders for both lay and professional audiences. He is a faculty member for PESI HealthCare — an international continuing education company that  presents workshops on anxiety disorders and OCD for health professionals throughout the USA.

Dr. Hyman has published several books and articles on OCD, including his first book on OCD, co-authored with Cherry Pedrick, RN, The OCD Workbook: Your Guide to Breaking Free from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder published in 1999 by New Harbinger Publications, has received outstanding reviews and has sold more than 100,000 copies worldwide. The revised 2nd edition of "The OCD Workbook" was published in 2005. In addition, Dr. Hyman and Ms. Pedrick have co-authored two books for teenagers, entitled "Anxiety Disorders" from Lerner Publishing, and "Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder" published by Millbrook Press — which was awarded one of 2004 Outstanding Science Trade Books by the Children's Book Council and National Science Teachers Association committee. In addition, it was chosen by the New York Public Library to be included in it's annual "2004 Books for the Teen Age."

Dr. Hyman is a member of several national organizations including the Obsessive Compulsive Foundation, the Anxiety Disorders Association of America and the Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy, the National Mental Health Association, the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, and the Trichotillomania Learning Center of California. In addition, he serves on the scientific advisory board of the International OCD Foundation.
